Perth
Perth goes by many names including "The Prettiest Town in Ontario." - TV Ontario, the "Greenest Town in Ontario." - TVO Honourable Mention and "The Best Place in Canada to Retire." - Chatelaine Magazine. Nestled in a parkland setting along the Tay River, located on the Trans-Canada highway (Hwy #7), Perth is an easy commute from Western Quebec, Upper New York State, and all of Eastern Ontario. If you live farther away, fly into the convenient Ottawa International Airport, rent a car, and within the hour you’ll be checking into your choice of several accommodations in Perth. Perth is an incredible destination for a couple’s retreat, a quiet family getaway, or an essential stop on a tour of Ontario. With its famous architecture and hospitality, Perth’s charm can warm even the coldest of hearts. With beautiful restaurants, cafes and B&B's, life is better in Perth.
Heritage
Come to Perth for its history, like heritage buildings from the 19th-century, and stay for its future. History records Perth Ontario as a unique military settlement named after the town of Perth in Scotland. After the War of 1812, Perth was established in the spring of 1816 as part of a strategic defense plan against invasion from the south. By the fall of 1816 over 1500 men, women and children occupied the scenic one square mile village of Perth. Today Perth is a modern community with old-world charm; a living, breathing mosaic of life in rural Ontario during the 1800's. The streets are lined with heritage homes and shops nestled in a picturesque setting along the Tay River. You can almost see and feel the pioneers as you move about the streets. There is a great wealth of Canadian history, architecture, and culture to be found in Perth. That said, Perth also offers modern practicality with essential amenities, shopping, fitness centres and fibre optic internet.
Activities / Events
Perth is known for its arts and theatre culture, but there’s also many outdoor and recreational adventures including paddling, cycling, and other sports. With the Tay River running through Town as well as dozens of lakes surrounding the area, there’s no shortage of outdoor activities. There are also two places to Golf in Perth including the Perth Golf course, which is the oldest course in Canada. There’s also the 2016 Reader’s choice winner for Best Golf Course, the beautiful Mapleview Golf and Country Club. Perth is also a destination for annual festivities. Every year thousands come to Perth for its famous festivals and events such as the Festival of the Maples, Canada Day, Festival of Lights, Santa Claus Parade, and the Polar Bear Plunge to name a few. The four seasons provide Perth with a diverse beauty, with plenty of recreational activities for visitors of all ages year round.
Dining
There’s no shortage of authentic culinary experiences in Perth. Eating and drinking well are necessities with restaurants that range from delicious pub meals such as at O’Reilly’s Ale House and Rocky River Café, to exquisite fine dining at the Locks restaurant, the Stone Cellar and Bistro 54, to thirst-quenching brews and spirits at Top Shelf Distillery and the famous Perth Brewery. As Perth offers so many culinary options, we implore you to try them all.
Shopping
Come to downtown Perth for your most unique shopping experience yet. There are boutiques, fashion stores, children’s stores, bookstores, and endless history. Downtown Perth makes for the perfect day of window shopping. If you’re a cottager coming to the Perth area and don’t want to go out for groceries, call Metro grocery and have your grocery list delivered to your door or set up for pickup. Perth also has many banks, pharmacies, hardware stores, professionals, services, and education offerings to fit your needs.
Sports
There’s a wide range of physical activities including hiking, biking, fishing, and fitness centres. If you’re more of a spectator, Perth is represented by the Perth Blue Wings in the Eastern Ontario Junior “B” Hockey League. The team offers a night out to watch great local hockey for a low price!
R & R
Perth has many remedies for relaxation. Perth is home to not only Ontario’s prettiest architecture, but also its prettiest nature such as the Tay River, which flows underneath the bridges with a five-acre park behind Town Hall. With so many beautiful nature walks with the sound of running lakes and rivers, as well as many spas, such as The Perth Parkside Inn and Spa, it’s hard to stress in Perth. Discover its artistic community or relax in one of its many parks for your next R & R fix.
