Perth town hall staff is considering phasing in new development charges following complaints from area builders and developers.

A public meeting on the issue was held during the Perth town council meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 24, and heard from residents and developers about the proposed increase in rates collected from new developments.

MAKING THE CASE

Peter Simcisko of Watson and Associates Economists Ltd., presented the findings of a study on the town’s development charges. (The town’s current development charge bylaw expires on Nov. 10, and council is hoping to have the new version passed by Oct. 22. A draft bylaw report was presented to council on Aug. 13, and it is hoped that the new charges will kick in on Nov. 10.)

Simcisko reminded council that development charges were a way for town hall “to recover the cost required to cover current levels of service.”
